If you can afford to run another car but would rather spend your money on something much more fun, demanding and rewarding, why not become a member of our Catalina Group? For an investment of £17,500 you can own a 1/20 share in the Catalina company, Catalina Aircraft Ltd.

There are ongoing fees of £150 per month, which are set at a level to bridge the gap between what the Catalina can generate through working and what it costs to run her - even in a bad year. In good years the Catalina can pay for herself, and in this case these fees will lay down some long-term security.

As well as being intimately involved with the running of a very special aircraft, you will also have several ways to experience flying in the Catalina:

  • Firstly, all members can fly free to airshows and events which the Catalina is attending, whenever possible.

  • Secondly, all members have an annual allowance of 'at cost' flying (£600 per hour for the first 3 hours). Pilot members of the Group can use this time to train and qualify as pilot on the Catalina - after which they can pilot the aircraft to events. And all members can pool this time and join one of the annual members' tours, on which a number of members will make a tour for a few days or weeks on a route of their choice.

The operation is managed by Plane Sailing, based at Duxford, with nearly 15 years' experience of Catalina operations - including hundreds of air displays, a number of filming contracts, four months of daily landings at Italian coastal resorts for Peroni, and a 20,000 mile filming tour of South America for Peter Stuyvesant. Amongst all this flying there has been plenty of water operating experience. Sadly, Plane Sailing's first Catalina was lost in a landing accident at Southampton in 1998.

We have now restarted the operation, with another Catalina airframe. At the same time we have formed the Catalina Group, intending thereby to ensure the long-term survival of an airworthy Catalina. So we shall continue to make use of our hard-won years of experience, enjoying again the fun and satisfaction of keeping this particular piece of aviation history alive and flying and on display, and - perhaps most importantly - reminding today's younger generations of the service and sacrifices of all those wartime crews who gave so much with the Catalina.

As a shareholder, you have the option to participate at whatever level you wish. You can just turn up occasionally and take a free flight on this wonderful aircraft; or as a pilot you can plan and take part in our regular 1-5 day display flights across the UK and much of Europe each summer; or you can spend all your spare time getting intimately involved with any support aspect of our operation at Duxford, cleaning, maintaining, or helping in other ways; or of course, anything in between.

One thing is for sure, the opportunity to own a piece of such a special aircraft and take part in her display and preservation is a rare one indeed. Keeping this particular piece of aviation history alive and flying and on display, and - perhaps most importantly - reminding today's younger generations of the service and sacrifices of all those wartime crews who gave so much with the Catalina - is a privilege which also happens to be lots of fun!
